5. The Web UI — Menu Bar

KaKeKiKoKu's menu bar is at the top of the web interface. From left to right: the logo, three dropdown menus, and the display controls.

The logo

The W at the far left opens this documentation when you click it — but it is also a live indicator. It blinks whenever your AI touches KaKeKiKoKu: green for a read, red for a write, blue for a sync. A glance tells you whether the AI is working with your knowledge right now. The bottom bar shows the same activity in words (see chapter 8).

File Menu

  • Open project: opens a folder as a KaKeKiKoKu project.
  • Close project: closes the selected project. Doesn't delete anything from disk.
  • Close all projects: appears only when more than one project is open. Closes them all at once.
  • Copy open projects list: copies the paths of every open project to the clipboard. It exists for Precise mode: your AI doesn't receive project-opened events there, so this is how you tell it — in one paste — which projects you are working on.
  • Recent projects: submenu with the latest opened projects for quick access.
  • Projects available to AI: opens a dialog listing your open and recent projects, each with its availability check. The check decides which projects the AI can see and work with, open or not: unchecked projects never appear in its project list, its sync or its searches. Unchecking takes full effect in new AI sessions — if the AI has already seen the project in the current session, it keeps what it knows until that session ends. For a one-off exception, give the AI the project's path in chat: it can open it for that session only, and the check stays off.
  • New sidecar: creates a sidecar for the resource selected in the tree.
  • New entity: creates a standalone entity.
  • New Markdown document: creates an empty Markdown file with its KaKeKiKoKu context already attached. Choose this when you want a normal project document, not a standalone KaKeKiKoKu entity.
  • New folder: creates a new folder with its sidecar.
  • Backup: creates a labeled backup of the project.
  • Restore backup: restores the entire project to a previous point from a list of available snapshots.
  • Open backup folder: opens the folder where KaKeKiKoKu stores backups in the file explorer.
  • Export project: copies all project files to a folder of your choice, without any context files. Useful for publishing or deploying your project without KaKeKiKoKu files mixed in. Also available from the project's right-click context menu in the navigation panel.
  • Export knowledge ›: submenu with several ways to export your project's knowledge to standard Markdown. All exports are saved in the Exports folder inside your working directory. Each export is a snapshot — you can accumulate several and compare how your project's knowledge evolves over time.
    • Complete: exports all project knowledge into a single Markdown file. Includes every documented resource: descriptions, decisions, rules, rejected alternatives, relations, and folder contents. This is your anti-lock-in guarantee — standard Markdown, readable by any tool.
    • Executive Summary: generates a high-level overview using only folder-level documentation (description, summary, and conclusions), plus resources marked as important. Ideal for onboarding new team members, sharing with stakeholders, or getting a quick overview.
    • Executive Summary + AI: generates the executive summary and then opens the “Talk to AI” dialog, passing the generated file. The AI has access to the full project and the summary as a starting point — you can ask it to adapt, analyze risks, compare with previous versions, or transform the report to your needs.
    • Pending & Drafts + AI: exports all resources marked as pending or draft (with all their fields) and opens the “Talk to AI” dialog. Useful for a project manager to see at a glance what’s incomplete and ask the AI for a priority analysis.
  • Exit: shuts KaKeKiKoKu down properly. This one matters: closing the browser tab does not stop KaKeKiKoKu — the process keeps running quietly in the background. Exit asks for confirmation, closes the local server, and sends the browser to the KaKeKiKoKu home page. There is deliberately no keyboard shortcut for it.

Settings Menu

  • Application: opens the global application settings panel (language, theme, local port, editing, sync, backups). See chapter 10.
  • Project submenu — one per open project, labelled with its name. Two entries inside:
    • Configuration: exclusions, discards, important resources, required fields, and other project-specific settings.
    • Schema: a read-only inventory of the project's custom sections, showing which ones exist, how often they're used, and the resources that contain them.

Help Menu

  • Documentation: opens KaKeKiKoKu documentation in the browser (kakekikoku.com/docs).
  • License Agreement: opens the KaKeKiKoKu license in the browser.
  • Reset interactive help: KaKeKiKoKu shows contextual help dialogs the first time you use each feature (e.g., the first time you create a sidecar, the first time you search, etc.). Each dialog has a "Don't show again" option. If you dismissed them and want to see them again, this option resets them all.
  • Save Diagnostic Report 💾: writes a plain-text support report to your Downloads folder and tells you the exact path. It contains infrastructure only — port, working directory, sync mode, application settings, MCP registration hints — and deliberately no project content, no file names, and no error-log lines. Attach it when you report a problem that looks environmental (KaKeKiKoKu won't start, the AI won't connect).
  • Report Bug 🐛: opens a dialog explaining that KaKeKiKoKu is in an early launch phase and may contain bugs. It shows the support email address (which you can copy with one click) and notes that the typical response time is 24 to 48 hours. Your feedback is essential to improve the product.
  • Send Suggestion 💡: opens a dialog to send improvement ideas, feature requests, or any suggestion. Shows the support email (copyable with one click). Contributors who help shape KaKeKiKoKu will be recognized in future updates.
  • About: shows the KaKeKiKoKu version, product information, and a recommended update notice if your version is outdated.

Display controls

At the right end of the bar there are two groups of icon buttons, separated on purpose because they do different things. The first group shows and hides individual panels:

The second group holds the two workspace modes:

The buttons light up when their panel or mode is active. Focus mode is especially useful when you want to concentrate on editing a resource without distractions — it hides all panels at once.

Quick resource slots (1-4)

The four numbered buttons in the navigation panel header (next to the flag navigators) are temporary shortcuts to resources you want to revisit often during the current work session. They are useful when a project has many resources, or when you keep moving between a few files, folders, or entities while editing context. They are described here because their keyboard shortcuts are the only ones KaKeKiKoKu claims globally.

  • Assign a slot: select a resource in the navigation tree, then press Alt+Shift+1, Alt+Shift+2, Alt+Shift+3, or Alt+Shift+4. You can also right-click a numbered button and choose the assign option.
  • Go to a slot: click an assigned number, or press Alt+1, Alt+2, Alt+3, or Alt+4.
  • Clear a slot: right-click the numbered button and choose the clear option.

The two assignment routes are not identical. The keyboard also memorizes the section or subsection you are on, so the slot takes you back to that exact block. The right-click option stores the resource only — by the time the pointer reaches the menu, the block you were hovering is gone.

Empty slots appear inactive. Their tooltip explains how to assign the current resource. Once assigned, the tooltip shows the resource the button will open. When a slot is empty, KaKeKiKoKu does not take over its Alt+number shortcut.

Slots remember both the project and the resource, so they work correctly when several KaKeKiKoKu projects are open at the same time, even if two resources have the same name in different projects. They do not persist between sessions; when you restart KaKeKiKoKu, the slots start empty again. If the project behind a slot is no longer open, KaKeKiKoKu will not jump to it.

Why so few? KaKeKiKoKu runs in a browser, and the browser owns most combinations — Ctrl+N, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+W, Ctrl+F, and Ctrl+19 for switching tabs. A web app cannot reliably take those back, so a shortcut that half works is worse than no shortcut. Quick slots use Alt precisely because browsers leave it alone. Everything else lives in the menus, the buttons, and the search box.
